Hey Rob; I had exactly the same problem, oil all over. I traced it to the speedo cable and discovered that the o ring was gone. Probably lost it when I took the tank off to set the valves. Anyhow, I did just what you mentioned about the rubber faucet washer. The one I found was a tight fit inside the coupler and had a small hole in the center which I was able to shove the speedo cable through. It has been a tight seal ever since, and as far as I can see is a better seal than the original o ring. Tell you what, if I could not find one like that, I would try to make one. It can't be that hard to make a little rubber washer out of some piece of rubber.
